Sustainability at
Surfana Festival 2018

This year Surfana Festival takes it to the next level when it comes to sustainability. We are aiming to go zero waste and want to power the festival with nothing else but green energy and good vibes. We work with small and big initiatives to make this change happen.

Stay green and keep it clean

We’d like you to take the next step with us to stop creating waste and choose the good life without trash. Together with Responsible Event professionals Toon & Simon we aiming for a zero waste festival. Our goal is to produce as little waste as possible and recycle as much as we can. The festival area will be single use plastic free, the decoration will be set up to last more than just one festival and still look amazing as well. But of course we also need your help! Will you join us in our mission to become zero waste?

Wildlife adventure

The camping that hosts the festival is surrounded by a nature reserve called the Kennemer Duinen. These dunes are home to beautiful creatures, so please stay on the paths and take your trash with you. We have foxes, European bison, wild horses, rabbits, deer and many other creatures living around the campsite so keep your food safe and clean up after yourself. If you are nice to the animals, they’ll be nice to you.

Leave nothing but sand castles

Want to go to the beach? It’s awesome that the beach is just a hop skip and a jump over the dunes, but whatever your intentions are on the beach, make sure that you bring all waste back with you. We love our ocean with all our hearts and want to protect her from trash, cigarette buds and toxins.

All decoration is made from recycled materials. Mostly wood. Produced by afwerking.nu who only use wood that would otherwise be thrown away. Afwerking also provides jobs for troubled youths – check them out!

Cigarettes filters are being dropped in special poles on the festival terrain. We collect all filters and they will be recycled in Plastic pallets and feed 3d printers!

Foodies

All our delicious food and drinks will be served on real plates or biodegradable disposables. So the whole festival will be plastic free. And we would like you to not bring any (single use) plastic disposables as wel. There is a big variety of vegan and vegetarian food and the meat is sourced sustainable.

Super awesome sustainable clinics

We offer a wide range of clinics and some of them are specifically oriented on sustainability. You can find a list of our clinics HERE. So green up your festival and join us!

FAQ’s

Do I need to print my ticket?

NO! You can also use your phone. Make sure that you have your ticket ready when you reach the ticket scanner, show your ticket on your phone and you are good to go!

I want to come by car, how does it work?

Unfortunately parking spaces are limited on the camping area. If you come by car, drop your things of at the kiss and ride area at the entrance to de Lakens, but you’ll have to park your car at the Ice skating hall in Haarlem. From there you can take the shuttle bus to the festival.

Can I compensate my CO2 emissions for the shuttle bus?

Yes, you can! Just check the box on your shuttle bus ticket and well take care of your CO2 compensation. Yay!

Where do I leave my trash?

Please put your trash in the big collection points near the bath houses. We separate glass, cardboard/paper and residual waste. If you see any trash (also if it is not yours), please pick it up so we can keep the dunes lush and clean.

Hmm, you don't separate plastic?

That’s right! We don’t need to because the waste processing company does that for us.

What can you do?

1

Water Bottles

Bring your own reusable water bottle. You can refill this with water for free. This way, you can stay hydrated without plastic disposable bottles.
2

Getting there

Carpool or come by public transport! The public buses stop in front of Camping de Lakens.
